Location: Birtley Estate, Bramley, near Guildford
Host: Paul from Hedges & Hurdles
Craft Your Own Companion for the Trails
There is something deeply satisfying about walking through the Surrey Hills with a staff you shaped with your own hands. Join the expert team from Hedges & Hurdles at Birtley Estate for a full-day immersive workshop in the traditional craft of rustic walking stick making.
Set within our stunning 48-acre private estate, this workshop connects you with the ancient heritage of green woodworking. Under the expert guidance of Lorraine and Paul, you will transform a raw piece of timber into a functional, beautiful work of art.
What You Will Learn
This hands-on course covers the entire process of creating a sturdy, traditional walking stick:
- Material Selection: Understanding the best wood types (such as hazel or ash) for durability and balance.
- Steam Straightening: Learn the fascinating technique of using heat and steam to straighten a natural “shank.”
- Shaping & Peeling: Master the use of traditional tools, including drawknives and shave horses, to smooth and refine your wood.
- Finishing Touches: Add personal flair by fitting a handle (crook, thumb, or knob) and finishing the wood to withstand the elements.
The Birtley Estate Experience
Your workshop takes place in the heart of the Surrey Hills Natural Landscape. Between shavings, take a moment to breathe in the fresh air of Birtley’s woodland trails and scenic lakes. It’s the perfect environment to slow down, learn a new skill, and enjoy the “joy of making.”
“A wonderful day spent in the woods. Learning to use the shave horse and seeing a bent branch turn into a straight, polished walking stick was pure magic.”
